There are probably many ways to make the teeth look better when using a photo-editing software but in this tutorial I will show you a simple way to make the teeth whiter using the dodge and sponge tool in Photoshop. First, we need to have a sample image to edit or if you like to use your own image you can do so. In this activity, I will be using the image below.
Our goal is to lighten the color of the teeth because it is already near the yellowish part of the color spectrum.
The Dodge and Sponge Tools are located in the Toolbar, which is usually placed in the left corner of the Photoshop User Interface. The use of the Dodge tool is to lighten any object while the Burn tool is the opposite. The Sponge tool is somewhere between the middle or it usually affects the midtones. In this activity, we will only be using the Dodge and the Sponge tool to make the Teeth look whiter.
Click on the Dodge Tool, then choose a Soft Round Brush. Adjust to the brush size to a desired diameter, set the Range to Midtones and Exposure to 50%.
Place the mouse cursor on the yellowish teeth and click on it. You will gradually see changes in the image. Try experimenting with the Dodge and Sponge Tool – but most of the time, you will only be using the Dodge tool. In the image below, I used a Dodge and Sponge Tool on the Left Side of the Teeth and you can see the huge difference of the two sides.
You can continue working on it until your desired tone of the teeth.
