Resizing an image in Photoshop is very easy for those who have tried it but for those who will be exploring the software for the first time, it will be time consuming. So if you are able to think of searching the solution in Google and found this web page, you are lucky that you won’t be wasting hours by just resizing an image.
Photoshop is one of the many software developed by Adobe. It is a photo-editing software that lets you create a wide-variety of designs by combining your creativity with technology.
Say you have a large image – example below is from
The original size of the image is 1024×768 pixels but the above image is automatically resized by wordpress to 620×465 pixels. Clicking the image will bring you to the original size image. You can download it for this activity or you can use your own image.
First, we open the image in Photoshop by going to Photoshop > File > Open
Locate the image and you will see the full size of the image in Photoshop.
To resize the image in Photoshop, go to Image > Image Size or you can simply press on Alt+Ctrl+I altogether.
The original image size of the Garden.jpg file is shown below. This is prior to changing its dimensions.
To make sure the dimensions of the image are proportional, put a check on the “Constraint Proportion” checkbox. This will ensure that the re-sized image is not stretched. For this activity, I will change the width to 300px, since I checked the “Constraint Proportion”, the height automatically changed to 225px.
If you will be using the image for your website or upload it to another website, you can just ignore the document size. I will discuss the document size later. Just to give you an idea, the document size is often used in print materials such as tarpaulins, photos, etc.
Below is the resized image of the Garden.jpg file, which is now 300×225 pixels.
