Penguin Update

I have seen a lot of website dropped their rankings because of the 2 Google algorithm update. It’s just so sad that some webmasters who have been doing good SEO practices suffer the same and I in particular is included.

I have managed to get my rankings back for some important keywords for some of my websites. I somehow was able to come up with a strategy on how to deal with Penguin and Panda the right way. The steps that I followed works for me and I hope it will work for your sites as well. Below are the things you can try to do:

1. Review and Understand Google Webmaster Guidelines – The webmaster guidelines has been the handbook for a lot of webmasters all over the world as it leads them the right way in increasing their rankings on Google search results. The guidelines when followed will help Google find, index and rank a certain website. Last October 3, 2012, Google has released the updated version of the Webmasters Quality Guidelines. They have expanded the link schemes and hidden text guidelines in order to provide more information on how to create quality websites. They have also added a set of guidelines for rich snippets since structured markup is becoming more popular. Read the Google Webmaster Guidelines again and implement what you think is important for your site.

2. Unique Content is Important – Nothing beats a unique quality content you put all throughout your site.  Getting traffic will become purposeless if you don’t live up to user expectation. Google has always rewarded websites that gives a good user experience. Develop content that is direct and informative about a particular topic. Create web pages that look good and make sure that landing pages will have high conversion rate.

3. Vary Your Links – Many people have said that Google is all about quality content and links. Links from authoritative website such as those that have high page rank. But DO NOT buy links as this is against the Google guidelines. You can start with a blog, which has rich quality content, and then you can link that to your main site. You will also have to vary the anchor text of your links. Aim to have 40% brand links(the brand/name of the company as anchor text), 40% keyword links (keywords as anchor text) and 20% generic links (those that pertains to click here, check this out, etc).

4. Do not Overdo SEO – Since you have reviewed and implemented the things that you think is important for your site, make sure that you don’t overdo SEO. Overdoing it might make your site appear like a spam and Google doesn’t like that. Stick to what you want to deliver to your visitors and treat your site as your most important asset.
